MEMORIA:

The commission: ‘build a house/studio for a writer on land on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Make it contemporary, clean in line, yet sensitive to local tradition. Provide room for a grand piano and 17,000 books.’

Using environmental software, sun movement, prevailing winds and desired views were plotted onto the site to find the optimum position and orientation for the new building.

The solution that emerged consists of two timber pavilions, one a studio and living space, the other a bedroom and bathroom, each a parallelogram, orientated so their sides are parallel to the boundaries of the site. The glazed ends are then twisted away from the meridian so as to catch the northerly sea breezes and shade the internal spaces throughout the year.

The books and the structure are brought together in what are in effect structural bookcases.

The two pavilions are linked by a raised walkway which is long enough so that the smaller building is not in the wind shadow of the bigger one. By fully glazing with louvred panels the entire façade is openable to allow the sea breeze to flow through the space.
